Following its successful launch in June and July, wagamama has announced the extension of its “Wasteless with wagamama” campaign through the end of September. Initially started in celebration of World Environment Month in June, the campaign aims to promote mindful consumption and reduce food waste within the community.
As part of the campaign, wagamama introduced reusable Tupperware containers, available for 12 AED in-store. Customers who use these containers for leftovers can benefit from a 10% discount on their bill each time they dine in and take away food using their wagamama Tupperware. Additionally, customers are entered into the Waste-less Competition by using their Tupperware at least five times between June and September, with a chance to win 1,000 AED worth of meals. The competition winner will be announced on September 30, 2024.
Food waste is a major issue in the UAE, with nearly 1,000,000 tons of food waste produced annually. This makes up about 38% of the total waste generated. The UAE government has targeted food waste reduction as a crucial part of its National Food Security Strategy 2051. According to the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP), 34% of waste is food left on customers’ plates, highlighting the need for changes in consumer behavior.
Since the campaign’s inception, wagamama has seen significant progress:
750 boxes sold
388.8 kg of CO₂ equivalent greenhouse gases reduced
720 kg of food scraps rescued
Ankitha Rajendaran, Marketing Director at wagamama, commented, “At wagamama, we embrace the principle of kaizen, focusing on continuous improvement in every aspect of our business. We are dedicated to creating a culture of non-waste. The Wasteless with wagamama campaign embodies our commitment to sustainability, community involvement, and the relentless pursuit of positive change.”
By extending the campaign, wagamama hopes to further instill the importance of food conservation and sustainability in families, teaching children early on about the value of mindful consumption. Join wagamama in their mission to waste less and win big, making a significant impact on the environment and the community.
