Ferrari from 1962 sets record as most expensive ever sold at auction, fetching $51.7 million

A 1962 Ferrari by Scaglietti, the prestigious Italian coachbuilder, was sold for $51.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York City, becoming the most expensive Ferrari ever sold at auction.

The sale of the 330 LM / 250 GTO also marked it as the most expensive classic car sold publicly worldwide this year.

The car, previously owned by collector Jim Jaeger, had a final hammer fall of $47 million, with a buyer’s premium of 10% bringing the total to $51.7 million. Despite the record, the final sale price was lower than the expected “in excess” of $60 million.

The Ferrari holds a special place in history as the only GTO example originally equipped with a 4-litre engine and raced by Scuderia Ferrari in 1962, earning class and overall wins. The car sold in less than 20 minutes and started at $34 million, with bidding primarily from phone bidders.

Fake officers rob Indian gold smuggler after he conceals precious metal in body cavity

0

An Indian visitor to the Gulf successfully smuggled two gold capsules worth AED222,550 by concealing them in his body cavity upon landing in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on October 28.

After passing through customs and airport checks, he was coerced by two individuals claiming to be from the Anti-Terrorist Squad. They assaulted him, forcing him to surrender the concealed gold in a high-rise building.

The victim lodged a police complaint, revealing he flew to Dubai at the behest of an acquaintance to smuggle gold. Investigations are underway, delayed by the complainant’s initial reluctance to approach authorities due to fear.

Gold smuggling in India has surged by 33% to 160 tonnes in 2022, attributed to increased import duties and rising gold prices. Smugglers employ inventive methods such as concealing gold in body cavities or ingesting capsules filled with gold paste.

UAE issues 4-day rain alert following record 28 consecutive days of rainfall

0

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has issued a 4-day rain alert for the UAE, spanning from November 15 to 18. This comes on the heels of 28 consecutive days of rain in the country. On November 15, the weather is anticipated to be cloudy, with evening rains in the forecast. Thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall are expected on Thursday and Friday, particularly in the east, north, and coastal areas. Saturday will see an easing of the weather, with partly cloudy conditions persisting and forecasted rains in the east.

Notably, the UAE experienced its lowest temperature of the season on Monday, dropping to less than 10°C in Rakna, Al Ain. Other areas, including Dubai’s Al Marmoom and Lahbab, recorded their lowest temperatures of 13°C on the same day. According to the NCM’s five-day weather forecast, temperatures are expected to decrease further on Thursday.

The recent weather pattern follows a month-long period of heavy rains, thunderstorms, and hail from October 14 to November 10. This resulted in flooded valleys and streets, with waterfalls cascading off the mountains. Last weekend marked the first dry one in four weeks. Despite being in the midst of the rainy season, NCM experts note that the showers have been heavier than usual.

UAE calls for medical volunteers for Gaza field hospital amid ‘Gallant Knight 3’ campaign

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) is extending an invitation to licensed medical professionals to volunteer at the UAE’s field hospital in the Gaza Strip, as part of the ‘Gallant Knight 3’ campaign. This initiative has been launched by the Emirates to offer support to the Palestinian community in Gaza. The volunteering opportunities are open to doctors registered with the Ministry of Health and Prevention, the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, and volunteers affiliated with humanitarian entities in the UAE.

Medical professionals interested in volunteering can submit their details through a link shared by the DHA. The information required includes full name, gender, nationality, age, license details, UAE mobile number, and email address.

The establishment of the field hospital is a crucial component of the ‘Gallant Knight 3’ campaign, initiated by UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The campaign aims to address the challenging healthcare situation in Gaza, providing vital medical support.

In response to the dire conditions in Gaza, the UAE has dispatched sixteen planes carrying supplies and equipment to support the construction of the 150-bed field hospital. The hospital is expected to include anaesthetics, surgery, gynaecology, and intensive care units catering to both children and adults.

Health facilities in Gaza are under immense strain, and there is a shortage of medical supplies due to ongoing attacks on hospitals and healthcare infrastructure. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), a month of continuous bombardment in Gaza has resulted in the death of over 10,800 Palestinians, with a significant proportion being women and minors. More than 2,300 others are believed to have been buried by strikes that have, in some cases, demolished entire city blocks.
