British Adventurer Philip Durrell Leads UAE’s Adventure Tourism Evolution at RAK Leisure

3

Meet Philip Durrell, the Senior Director of Adventure Activities at RAK Leisure, whose passion for the outdoors has shaped both his career and his outlook on life.

Philip’s journey began humbly, leaving school at 16 with dreams of architectural greatness. Little did he know, his path would veer dramatically when he joined the Royal Marines Commandos. Serving for 12 years, he honed his skills as a communicator, survival instructor, and leader. Reflecting on his time in the Marines, Philip acknowledges the profound impact it had on shaping his character and opening doors to new opportunities.

“I never really intended to stay in the Marines for long but ended up serving for 12 years and leaving as a Sergeant. Looking back on it, it was an amazing experience and opened so many doors for me.”

Leaving the military in his early 30s, Philip ventured into entrepreneurship, founding his own outdoor pursuits company. His expertise led him to Dubai, where he set up a leadership program and discovered a new home. Embracing the vibrant UAE landscape, he found himself drawn to the burgeoning adventure tourism sector.

“I had a great time in my role as Regional Manager for the expedition company in Dubai but in 2020 was approached by RAK Hospitality Holding about an exciting new role managing and developing the activities on Jebel Jais.”

Joining RAK Leisure over three years ago marked a pivotal moment in Philip’s career. Tasked with managing and developing activities on Jebel Jais, including the world’s longest zipline and the first Alpine coaster in the region, Philip found himself at the forefront of adventure tourism’s evolution in the UAE.

“I love the fact that I am involved in such an exciting time with the development of Adventure Tourism in this region. Every day there is a new challenge and it’s exciting to be involved in the developments going on today that will form the shape of Adventure Activities in the coming years in the region.”

Philip’s childhood memories of camping and scouting laid the foundation for his adventurous spirit. From scaling mountains to diving into icy waters, he thrives on challenges that push his physical and mental limits. Yet, amidst the adrenaline-fueled pursuits, Philip remains grounded by his belief in leading by example and giving back to communities in need.

“I’m a true believer that you should never ask someone to do something you were not prepared to do yourself.”

His time in Sierra Leone with the UN protection team left an indelible mark, reminding him of the importance of gratitude and empathy. It’s a lesson he carries with him, driving his commitment to making a positive impact wherever he goes.

“Seeing the students, as well as the local communities, working alongside each other and integrating was very humbling, and it’s something that has always stayed with me.”

To those embarking on their own journey to success, Philip offers simple yet profound advice: stay true to yourself, work hard, and never forget where you came from. It’s a mantra that has guided him through life’s challenges and propelled him to new heights.

“Be true to yourself and work hard. Think about where you want to be in 5 or 10 years, then make a plan on how you will get there, but … don’t forget where you are today or where you came from.”

As the sun sets over the desert horizon, casting a golden glow over the city skyline, Philip Durrell stands as a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the unwavering spirit of adventure. In a world where borders blur and possibilities abound, his journey serves as an inspiration to all who dare to dream beyond the confines of convention.

The sponsorship will also allow Emirates to enjoy a presence at other marquee league events, including as a partner of NBA Crossover – an immersive fan event at NBA All-Star – and as the presenting partner of the NBA Finals Legacy Project, which features the dedication of new NBA Cares Live, Learn, or Play Centers in each NBA Finals team market.  Emirates branding will also be visible through virtual in-arena signage and on top of the backboard during nationally televised NBA games, beginning with the 2024 NBA All-Star Game.

Emirates will engage NBA fans around the world as a partner of select preseason and regular-season NBA Global Games and through the league’s interactive fan events, including “NBA District” and “NBA House.”

Fans will have the opportunity to watch NBA content on all Emirates flights via the airline’s inflight entertainment system, including long-form documentaries, player profiles, interviews and more.

The marketing partnership will also allow basketball fans to purchase a wide range of official NBA merchandise, including basketballs, sportswear and vintage collectibles, with co-branded collaborations to follow later this year.  The merchandise will be sold at the official Emirates Store at Emirates’ Headquarters in Dubai and online at www.emirates.store, which delivers worldwide.  Emirates Skywards members can also redeem Miles to purchase items from the exciting range.

Emirates’ patch will also be featured on the jerseys for all referees in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), beginning with the 2025 season, and NBA G League, the official minor league organization of the NBA, beginning with the 2024-25 season.

The 73rd NBA All-Star Game will take place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana and reach fans in 214 countries and territories in 60 languages on television, digital media and social media.

Taabia Khan: Dubai’s Badminton Prodigy Rises to World Number Two

In the heart of Dubai, a young and determined athlete is making waves in the world of badminton. Taabia Khan, at just 17 years old, has achieved the remarkable feat of securing the second spot in mixed doubles on the BWF Junior World Rankings. Her journey from a cricketing family background to becoming a badminton sensation is a testament to her passion, hard work, and the unwavering support of her family.

Taabia’s father, Omer Khan, arrived in the UAE over two decades ago with cricket as his gateway to a new life. A former national-level cricketer in India, Omer’s skills led him to a job in the shipping industry. While cricket ran in the family, it was Taabia who emerged as the torchbearer for a new sporting legacy.

Initially groomed to follow in her father’s cricketing footsteps, Taabia’s interest took an unexpected turn when she witnessed her mother playing badminton for leisure. Fascinated by the racquet sport, she shifted her focus and never looked back. Eight years later, Taabia has not only embraced badminton but has excelled on the international stage.

Taabia’s journey to the world number two spot includes three consecutive international titles in Uganda, Spain, and Cyprus. Reflecting on her success, Taabia acknowledges the hard work invested since the beginning. A Grade 12 student at the Indian Academy School in Dubai, she spends seven hours a day honing her skills at the Battledore Sports Academy under the guidance of head coach Alfaz Kalam.

The UAE Badminton Federation’s decision to allow expats to represent the country in international events opened doors for Taabia. This opportunity enabled her to participate in the senior Asian championships, gaining exposure and competing against some of the world’s best players.

Taabia’s father, Omer, fully supports his daughters’ badminton aspirations. The family’s commitment is evident as they prioritize international badminton tournaments over vacations. Omer envisions a future where Taabia and her younger sister, Mysha Omer Khan, achieve the coveted world number one ranking in the seniors category.

Taabia Khan’s rise from a cricketing family to the world number two in badminton showcases her dedication, talent, and the power of pursuing one’s passion. As she continues to make strides in the badminton world, Taabia’s story serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes, reminding them that the journey to success often takes unexpected turns but is profoundly rewarding.
