The use of virtual private networks (VPNs) to access blocked content, including as pornographic websites, gambling apps, and restricted dating programs, has become a growing concern in the Gulf area and the UAE.
According to data from Nord Security, demand for VPNs in the Gulf area increased by almost 30% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.
Residents of Gulf mostly utilize VPNs to make video calls using various communication apps. Regarding the actual content, it is prohibited to open topics like gambling, dating, drugs, and even pornography.
Violators of Article 10 of the UAE Cyber Law risk imprisonment and fines ranging from AED 500,000 to AED 2,000,000.
