Colombia has made a historic step by introducing a “X” gender option to its passports, catering to people who identify as non-binary.

The foreign ministry highlighted this progressive measure, with Andrea Garzon, a passport service official, emphasising the government’s commitment to gender diversity.
The judgement is consistent with a March 2022 court order that permitted residents to register as non-binary on official identity documents, moving away from the traditional male or female alternatives. Since the court’s decision, around 26 people have added this non-binary status to their identification cards and birth certificates.
Colombia now joins Australia, Pakistan, Nepal, New Zealand, Germany, Argentina, the United States, and Mexico in providing an inclusive gender choice.
