In a stroke of incredible luck, Bassem El Tibi, a self-proclaimed shopaholic and 50-year resident of Dubai, has become a millionaire through his frequent mall visits. Bassem, adorned in a white shirt and blue jeans, received a symbolic AED1 million cheque from Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) malls on Tuesday, emerging as the sole victor in the ‘Biggest Prize of the Year’ draw held during the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF).
This extraordinary win is a testament to Bassem’s positive attitude and meticulous shopping habits. Although he couldn’t recall the specific purchase that led to his triumph, Bassem revealed that he consistently scanned receipts, making him eligible for the draw. Notably, MAF malls departed from the traditional Share Reward points and presented Bassem with a substantial cash prize, marking a first in the history of such draws.
Ecstatic about his windfall, Bassem declared, “It’s 100 per cent cash,” revealing plans to invest a portion in property while generously assisting his siblings in Palestine with the remainder. As the director of special projects and governance in Abu Dhabi, Bassem lives with his family in Mirdif, favoring City Centre Mirdif for his shopping adventures.
The ‘Millionaire Campaign’ ran during DSF, attracting participants who spent a minimum of AED300 at select stores in Mall of the Emirates, City Centre Mirdif, City Centre Deira, City Centre Me’aisem, and City Centre Al Shindagha. The prize, co-invested by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, turned Bassem’s suspicions into sheer joy as he realized the call from MAF was indeed authentic.
