According to the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD), the new rule goes into effect starting on June 1, Wednesday.

Supermarkets offer reusable bags in Abu Dhabi; these bags are more sustainable and eco-friendly:
- Jute bags (natural fiber made from outer stem and skin of jute plant) At Lulu Hypermarkets, a jute bag costs AED 7.50.
- Biodegradable bags are made from plant-based materials like corn and wheat starch rather than petroleum. These bags are available at supermarkets at AED 2.50
- New paper bags
- Recycled paper bags
- Cloth bags
- Starch-based bags
