Elon Musk considers charging all X users to fight bots

Elon Musk, the founder of X (previously known as Twitter), has hinted at instituting a membership charge for all users in order to discourage automated accounts.

Twitter now provides a subscription service called X Premium, which costs $11 per month in the United States and £11 per month in the United Kingdom. Musk believes that charging a small monthly price for platform use might deter bot operators.

He stated that X presently has 550 million monthly users who create up to 200 million posts every day. This idea comes as the platform is seeing a major reduction in ad income, which has been ascribed in part to worries about Musk’s leadership and content control.

During a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the topic of free speech and antisemitism on the platform came up. Netanyahu expressed optimism that Musk might find measures to combat antisemitism while maintaining First Amendment values.
